People working well together

Why a mentally healthy workplace really works

It’s true what they say about positivity breeding positivity. If a workplace is providing positive vibes, the results are ROI positive as well. But what does it all really mean?

Essentially a workplace that’s mentally healthy means that there is a reduced risk of stress and normal work challenges are managed in a more controlled environment. People feel safe and supported and know it’s okay to put their hand up and ask for help.

Policies and procedures should align to reflect workplace mental health values

This positive culture must start within the core of an organisation. Policies and procedures should align to reflect the values and implement best practice in this area. Work, Health and Safety laws should align with these core standards to become a part of the fabric to protect the health and wellbeing of people physically as well as mentally.

This may include policies around interlinking legislation, documenting the prevention of discrimination, bullying, harassment, privacy and fair work.  However it must also be acknowledged that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the culture is upheld and promoted. If all staff foster this idea, this flows into productive teamwork and activities have a far greater chance of achieving a better outcome.

We need to be on the lookout for common industry shortfalls and hazards. Once you have been able to identify and assess the risk you are better equipped to control the risk. It’s the same principles of risk management that applies for physical safety or workers, but instead identifying and assessing mental safety.

Benefits to all staff

Once established, a mentally healthy workplace includes benefits such as less staff absenteeism, reduced turnover of staff, increased productivity and the luxury of attracting and retaining talented workers.

At the heart of a healthy workplace is a genuine belief in practicing what you preach. Lip service about mental health is not enough, it’s leading from the front and really understanding what goes on across all levels, in all departments. Getting your hands dirty has never been this productive!
